Staurolite – Natural fairy cross | Special collector's mineral

Staurolite is a fascinating mineral, particularly known for its extraordinary, naturally grown crystal forms.

Its dark brown to reddish-brown crystals can form characteristic cross-shaped intergrowths, known as staurolite twins. These unusual crystal crosses have also earned the mineral the name "fairy cross" or "cross stone."

The natural crystal faces and geometric shapes make staurolite an interesting collector's item for enthusiasts of exceptional minerals.

Origin & Mineralogy

• Mineral: Staurolite
• Alternative name: Fairy cross / Cross stone
• Mineral class: Silicates
• Crystal system: Monoclinic
• Color: Reddish-brown to dark brown, occasionally almost black
• Mohs hardness: 7–7.5
• Special feature: Characteristic twin crystals with cross-shaped intergrowth

What makes staurolite special?

Staurolite is primarily formed during the metamorphic transformation of aluminum-rich rocks under increased pressure and high temperature.

Its natural twin formations are particularly fascinating. Two crystals grow together at specific angles, which can result in the formation of characteristic crosses.

These extraordinary forms are of entirely natural origin and develop during crystal growth deep within the Earth's crust.

Staurolite crystals are therefore both mineralogically and visually interesting collector's items.
