Black tourmaline has been known as a mineral in Europe since ancient times. The name schorl for black tourmaline first appeared around 1500, while the name tourmaline was first mentioned around 1636. Black tourmaline is therefore still known as schorl today. Originally, the name schorl meant "impure, useless ore", as black tourmaline in particular was found in valuable ores.

Black tourmaline, also known as schorl, is formed exclusively through volcanic activity. The main areas where black tourmaline is found are Brazil, Madagascar and Afghanistan. Black tourmaline is often intergrown with various types of quartz, orthoclase, albite or various types of mica. The crystal formation of black tourmaline can be very varied. Black tourmaline can have tufted crystals, radial formations, as well as randomly assembled crystal lawns or floating steps. Dense masses - without any crystal formation at all - can also be found in black tourmaline.

Black tourmaline consists mainly of sodium, iron and aluminum, fluorine, hydrogen, oxygen and boron. The composition of schorl can vary depending on where it is found. Calcium, chromium, lithium, magnesium, manganese or titanium are also occasionally found - all of these elements give the black tourmaline a kind of personal touch, depending on where it is found.
