The name purpurite derives from the Latin "purpureus," meaning purple-red. It was named in 1905 by mineralogists Graton and Schaller in reference to its color. Due to its rarity, purpurite is very expensive and, because of its low hardness, is less commonly used as a gemstone.

Effect of Purpurite

This purple gemstone enhances perception, improves concentration, stimulates creativity and inspiration, and thus brings clarity. Purpurite increases empathy and fosters greater understanding of oneself and others. Furthermore, it has an encouraging and uplifting effect in times of sorrow or exhaustion and helps to resolve conflicts or seemingly hopeless situations more effectively.

It should be worn in direct contact with the skin. To experience its psychological effects, placing it on the head is recommended. To unlock energy reserves, it should be placed in the pubic area. For sensitive individuals, it may be too intense when placed on the heart or solar plexus.

Purpurite forms hydrothermally from lithiophilite in pegmatites. During transformation, lithium is removed from the minerals, leaving only purpurite. It is a manganese-iron phosphate and belongs to the phosphate mineral class. Manganese is the coloring element.
