Larimar is a variety of pectolite and forms hydrothermally in basalt. Its sky-blue color is due to the element vanadium. Larimar belongs to the mineral class of silicates.
Larimar was first discovered in the Dominican Republic in 1974. Its use as a gemstone began in the early 1980s. Because of its sea-blue color and as a tribute to his daughter Larissa, local art expert Miguel Mendez coined the name "Larimar" (mar = sea/Spanish). When the deposits along the southwest coast were exhausted, Mendez discovered another deposit seven kilometers offshore. The blue pectolite is usually available as a polished cabochon and is highly sought after as a gemstone, a prophecy stone, and a healing stone.
