Larimar is a variety of pectolite and forms hydrothermally in basalt. Its sky-blue color is due to the element vanadium. Larimar belongs to the silicate mineral class.
Larimar was first discovered in 1974 in the Dominican Republic. Its use as a gemstone began in the early 1980s. Due to its sea-blue color and as an homage to his daughter Larissa, the local art expert Miguel Mendez coined the term "Larimar" (mar = sea/Spanish). When the deposits along the southwest coast were exhausted, Mendez discovered another site seven kilometers from the coastline. The blue pectolite is mostly available as a polished cabochon and is highly sought after as a gemstone, future stone, and healing stone.
