Larimar is a variety of pectolite and forms hydrothermally in basalt. Its sky-blue color is due to the element vanadium. Larimar belongs to the silicate mineral class.
Larimare was first discovered in 1974 in the Dominican Republic. Its use as a gemstone began in the early 1980s. The local art expert Miguel Mendez coined the name "Larimar" (mar = sea/Spanish) because of its sea-blue color and as a tribute to his daughter Larissa. When the deposits along the southwest coast were exhausted, Mendez discovered another deposit seven kilometers offshore. The blue pectolite is mostly available as a polished cabochon and is highly sought after as a gemstone, a harbinger of doom, and a healing stone.
