The name Disthene is derived from the Greek "dis" (two) and "sthenos" (strength) and translates as "double hardness." It refers to the different hardnesses of this gemstone, which vary from one end to the other. The equally common name Kyanite also comes from Greek and refers to its predominantly blue color.
