A fascinating piece from outer space!

According to the original label, this extraordinary iron meteorite comes from the famous Gibeon meteorite strewn field in Namibia.

The polished and etched surface reveals a fascinating, naturally occurring crystal structure: the so-called Widmanstätten pattern.

Numerous fine, silvery-shining metal bands run across the surface, intersecting at various angles. Depending on the angle of light, beautiful contrasts emerge between light and dark sections.

Each piece possesses an individual pattern that originated from the natural crystallization of the metallic material inside its original parent body.

Origin & Properties

• Name: Gibeon meteorite
• Type: Iron meteorite
• Classification: IVA, fine octahedrite
• Origin: Namibia, Africa
• Find area: Great Namaqualand
• Composition: Primarily iron and nickel
• Special feature: Naturally occurring Widmanstätten structures
• Processing: Cut, polished, and etched

What are Widmanstätten structures?

These extraordinary line patterns are formed by the extremely slow cooling of an iron-nickel alloy over geological time scales.

During this process, different metallic phases form, particularly kamacite and taenite, which arrange themselves into characteristic geometric patterns.

By grinding and subsequently etching the surface, these structures, which were originally hidden inside, are made visible.

The lines were therefore not artificially engraved; they are an expression of the meteorite's natural crystal structure.

The famous Gibeon meteorite

Gibeon is among the most well-known iron meteorites in the world.

Its fragments were found in present-day Namibia. Long before their scientific investigation, the local Nama people used the extraordinary metallic material to craft tools and other objects.

Today, Gibeon is particularly renowned for its fine, aesthetic Widmanstätten patterns.
