Fuchsite is a variety of the mica muscovite (see description muscovite). This green mica was named after the Munich professor of mineralogy Johann Nepomuk von Fuchs. The green color of fuchsite is caused by the element chromium. Fuchsite is formed primarily in pegmatites or by transformation into andesites. Fuchsite occurs in mica slates, phyllites, quartzites and serpentinites formed by metamorphism from olivine-containing rocks or as a component of sediments in greywackes.

In contrast to other micas, fuchsite does not form large, tabular plates; it occurs in the form of dense, finely scaled, leafy masses. Fuchsite is highly glittering and intensely green in color. It gives the glittering, green aventurine its color by storing it in solid quartz.
