The name diopside is derived from Greek. "Di" means "two" and "opsis" refers to appearance and look. The combination of these two terms describes the so-called birefringence of light in diopsides. Incident light rays are split into two partial rays.

It is dried with a soft cloth and then placed in the sun to recharge. The energy of direct midday sun is the ideal environment for the diopside.
