What is descloizite?
Descloizite is a relatively rare lead-zinc vanadate that forms particularly in the oxidation zones of metal-bearing deposits.
The mineral was scientifically described in 1854 and named after the French mineralogist Alfred Des Cloizeaux.
It is characterized by its unusual crystal forms, which range from small, tabular crystals to striking, spear-shaped and complex intergrown aggregates.
The famous Berg Aukas Mine
The Berg Aukas Mine in Namibia is among the internationally known localities for descloizite.
The dark brown to reddish crystal groups originating from there, with their distinct crystal faces and characteristic tips, are particularly prized.
Mineral specimens from this historic deposit are interesting collector's items for enthusiasts of African minerals and unusual crystal forms.
