Chiastolite is a variety of Andalusite. It got its name from the cross that it shows in cross section. This is made up of the Greek words “chiatos” (X) and “lithos” (stone).
Chiastolite is formed by magma hitting coal-containing rock. Under certain conditions, a carbonaceous inclusion is formed, which is reminiscent of a cross. As a variety of Andalusite, Chiastolite also consists of an aluminum-silicon compound with different minerals. It consists predominantly of carbon.
