Chiastolite is a variety of andalusite. It gets its name from the cross shape it displays in cross-section. This name is derived from the Greek words "chiatos" (X) and "lithos" (stone).
Chiastolite forms when magma encounters carbonaceous rock. Under certain conditions, its characteristic carbonaceous inclusion, resembling a cross, forms. As a variety of andalusite, chiastolite also consists of an aluminum-silicon compound with varying mineral compositions. It is predominantly composed of carbon.
