Amazonite – origin and history

According to legends, Amazonite comes from Amazonia, which is attributed to reports by the German naturalist Alexander von Humoldt. This gave the healing stone the name Amazon Stone. However, it has never been found in the Amazon region. Rather, the find was probably the green nephrite that was brought from this area by the Spanish and was known as “piedras de amzonita”. Johann Friedrich August Breithaupt, a German mineralogist, then called this rock Amazonite. Amazonite was used to make jewelry as early as the Neolithic period. The ancient Egyptians also created valuable art and cult objects from the beautiful stone. The ancient Egyptians also saw it as a sacred stone that, worn as an amulet, was supposed to protect against illness and snake bites. The Indians of the Amazon carried the stone with them to keep harm away from them.

Amazonite is found in the USA (Colorado), Brazil, India, Madagascar, Norway, Russia and Namibia.
