Native American Sage (Salvia apiana)
White sage is the classic among cleansing herbs. As a Native American shamanic herb, it is used in sweat lodges and cleansing ceremonies. Its smoke repels all negativity!
White sage is often referred to simply as sage or Native American ceremonial sage. It is noteworthy that the English word "sage" is not only a name for the herb but also means wise.
White sage is native exclusively to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.
Its energies particularly support everything that has to do with letting go, cleansing, and clarifying. When smudged, it develops a strong, herbaceous-fresh scent that stimulates the mind and memory and creates a pure and clear atmosphere.
The herb bundle is lit over an open fire or a candle flame. The dry herbs ignite immediately and begin to burn. The flame is then blown out, and air is fanned to the glowing embers, creating smoke. If the entire smudge bundle is not needed, it can be extinguished by sticking the glowing end into sand until the embers are smothered.

Smudging with herbs, resins or spices is an ancient custom that has long been widespread in many cultures. Celts smudged on their house altars, in the Orient a particularly pronounced scent and smudging culture developed in honor of the gods, and Native American tribes in America sought healing and harmony with nature. While in the Western world it is mainly about room fragrancing and changing the atmosphere, smudging is used for other purposes in shamanism: there, targeted smudging with certain herbs is supposed to induce a change in the state of consciousness and enable a connection to other worlds. In the Catholic Church, incense scents are still an integral part of religious rituals today.
You are completely free "for what" you smudge, whether for cleansing your personal environment of negative energies, for a deep ritual with beings from other planets, for healing your body, for the enjoyment of the senses and for relaxing or just working....it is completely open to you what you use these powerful herbs for, which had their foundation in the North American Indians, the "Native Americans", as well as the Indian culture.
In general, one smudges and infuses to achieve certain effects. Be it to recover from a depressed mood by smudging, to ground oneself with appropriate substances or simply to feel good.
Smudging is often a meditative work that one gives to oneself. The smoke and scent caress body and mind and we can surrender.
Active ingredients of herbs, woods, resins and whatever else can be smudged, usually enter the body via the skin and less often, as assumed, via the nose.
Thus, a light infusion of an active ingredient of a plant can have its effect on the organism without it being strongly smelled. "Less is more" can contain a lot of truth when infusing.
