Larimar is a variety of pectolite and is formed hydrothermally in basalt. Its sky-blue color is caused by the element vanadium. Larimar belongs to the mineral class of silicates.
Larimares were first discovered in the Dominican Republic in 1974. They were first used as a gemstone in the early 1980s. Local art expert Miguel Mendez coined the term "Larimar" (mar = sea/Spanish) because of their sea-blue color and as a tribute to his daughter Larissa. When the sites along the southwest coast were exhausted, Mendez discovered another site seven kilometers from the coastline. The blue pectolite is mostly available as a cut cabochon and is highly sought after as a gemstone, future stone and healing stone.
