Fuchsite is a variety of the mica muscovite (see description of muscovite). This green mica was named after Johann Nepomuk von Fuchs, a professor of mineralogy in Munich. The green color of fuchsite is caused by the element chromium. Fuchsite is primarily formed in pegmatites or through alteration to andesites. It also occurs in mica schists, phyllites, quartzites, and serpentinites formed by metamorphism of olivine-bearing rocks, or as a component of sediments in greywackes.

Unlike other micas, fuchsite does not form large, tabular plates; it occurs as dense, finely scaly, flaky masses. Fuchsite is highly glittery and intensely green. It imparts its color to the glittering, green aventurine through inclusion in massive quartz.
