The name diopside is derived from the Greek. "Di" means "two" and "opsis" stands for appearance and sight. The combination of both terms describes the so-called double refraction of light in diopside. Incident light rays are split into two partial rays.

Diopside is a mineral. In chemistry, it is classified as a magnesium silicate under the formula CaMg. Diopside is formed under high pressure and high temperatures by combining magnesium-containing and calcareous rock sediments. It is particularly common in marble and calcareous silicate rocks. Diopside forms crystals up to 50 centimeters in size. Only some of them can be made into jewelry.
