Amethyst is a special violet color. The name of this gemstone comes from the Greek word “amethyein,” meaning “not drunk,” alluding to the detoxifying properties of amethyst, which were said to prevent drunkenness. The Greeks therefore often carried it with them. Today we know that even the strong amethyst cannot protect against drunkenness. However, the Greeks also wore amethyst against magic and evil thoughts. It should protect against false friends, avert dangers and turn bad thoughts into their opposite. In Roman mythology it was also called the Stone of Bacchus. This name goes back to the myth that the goddess Diana, jealous of a nymph's love for Bacchus (the god of wine), turned the nymph into an amethyst. In addition to Greek mythology, amethyst was also mentioned in the Bible. In the Revelation of John it was considered the last of the twelve foundation stones of the Jerusalem city wall. Amethyst is said to have extremely versatile healing effects, based on its cleansing effect. It can be used particularly well for skin care and can help against migraines. This was already known to Hildegard von Bingen, who used amethyst for impure skin. Amethyst druses placed in the room can positively influence the energy in the room and create harmony.
Amethyst has particularly cleansing abilities on the mind. All unnecessary thoughts and feelings are cleared by amethyst. This strengthens concentration and promotes objectivity in thinking, which means decisions can be made more quickly. However, the violet color of amethyst also inspires the imagination because it releases blockages and inhibitions, which promotes the processing of conflicts through dreams, especially during sleep.
