Larimar is a variety of pectolite and forms hydrothermally in basalt. Its sky-blue color is due to the element vanadium. Larimar belongs to the mineral class of silicates.
Larimare were first discovered in 1974 in the Dominican Republic. It was used as a gemstone at the beginning of the 1980s. Because of the sea-blue color and as a tribute to his daughter Larissa, the local art expert Miguel Mendez has chosen the name "Larimar" (mar = sea/span.) brought to life. When the sites along the southwest coast were exhausted, Mendez discovered another site seven kilometers from the shoreline. The blue pectolite is usually available as a cut cabochon and is highly sought after as a gemstone, future stone and healing stone.
